How to Know if a Candidate Will be a Reliable Hire

With all the money, time and resources it takes to find the right candidate for the job, let alone train them, it is imperative to do everything you can to ensure that they are going to be a reliable hire.  One bad employee can easily cost a company a minimum of $50,000, depending on their position. Before you hire a new candidate, there are a few things you’re going to want to check to see just how reliable they really are.

Check Their Past Employment History

If you see excessive job changes, gaps or other similar trouble signs, this should raise a red flag. While in some industries, like sales, it’s common to flip jobs, most industries do not see this kind of turnover. If you are uncertain, ask the candidate about their frequent job changes and work history and see how they respond. If they seem defensive or say derogatory things about their past employers, it’s time to look for a different candidate.

It is also important to call to verify employment and check on past work history, rather than just relying on a candidate’s word for it. While you may be limited to the exact questions you can ask about an employee, you can ask if they are eligible for re-hire. If the company says no, once again, look for a different hire.

Ask Leading Questions

There are personality tests you can administer that will help make it clear on the type of personality you’re dealing with and whether or not they are going to show the kind of job dedication you’re looking for. These tests are relatively inexpensive and can save you a great deal of money over time by highlighting specific traits you want to watch out for. While it’s possible to game a few questions on these tests, they are structured in such a way to reveal a lot more about the candidate’s personality and background than you may think. These tests are a true help to hiring manager.

Go With Your Instincts

If you aren’t 100% sold on a candidate, you need to listen to that. You’ve honed your instincts over several years and even though the candidate may be saying all the right things, if you still have doubts, it’s time to trust your instincts.
