Job Seekers Face a Tough Summer—Here’s How to Stand Out

KEY POINTS:

  • Hiring hit its slowest pace since 2014, making the job search even tougher for new college graduates.
  • CEO confidence is at a record low (28%), with fewer companies planning to grow their teams.
  • In a tough job market, personal connections can be one of a job seeker’s most powerful tools.

The U.S. job market is tough this summer—especially for new college graduates. Career coach and personal finance expert Mandi Woodruff-Santos described the current landscape as “trash” or particularly difficult —even for those with years of experience. For new grads just entering the workforce, that challenge is even greater.

Job Seekers Should Brace For A Tough Summer

At first glance, the overall numbers do not seem alarming.

Both the unemployment rate, which held at 4.2% in May, and layoffs remain historically low, indicating that employers are keeping their employees.

Still, U.S. hiring activity has been weak. In April, employers added jobs at the slowest pace seen since 2014, excluding the initial months of the pandemic.

Worker confidence has also declined. The quit rate has dropped below pre-pandemic levels, a sharp reversal from the “Great Resignation” a few years ago.

According to Navy Federal Credit Union’s chief economist, Heather Long, job seekers should brace for a tough summer. She described the current economy as one where businesses are proceeding with extreme caution, hiring only for critical roles. As a result, landing a job may be very difficult, especially for recent graduates.

Job Market Strain Can’t Last Forever

Although some indicators suggest the job market is weakening, a recession does not appear to be “imminent.”

For instance, employers added more jobs than expected in May, but the pace of those gains has slowed significantly, which economists view as a troubling sign.

Hiring hesitation is largely driven by ongoing economic uncertainty. According to The Conference Board, CEO confidence saw its steepest quarterly drop on record since tracking began in 1976. Business leaders cited geopolitical instability and unpredictable trade and tariff policies as their top concerns.

As a result, only 28% of CEOs plan to expand their workforce in Q2, down from 32% in the first quarter. Meanwhile, the share of CEOs planning to reduce headcount rose slightly to 28%.

Indeed Hiring Lab economist Cory Stahle pointed out that this steady erosion of the job market can’t continue forever. When hiring is slow and growth is limited, employers can only retain their current workforce for so long before they may be forced to make cuts, leading to rising unemployment even as job opportunities decline.

Network To Stand Out

In a competitive job market, personal connections can be one of your most powerful tools, according to career coach Woodruff-Santos.

Her top piece of advice: make yourself uncomfortable. Pushing beyond your comfort zone is often the key to building meaningful relationships that lead to real opportunities. Here are a few practical ways to stand out:

    • Step outside your comfort zone. Attend events, introduce yourself to people you don’t know, and don’t be afraid to ask for help. Engaging with new contacts can build your confidence and increase your visibility to potential employers.
    • Have a plan if you’re in a stopgap job. If you’ve taken a role just to make ends meet, don’t lose sight of your long-term goals. Stay focused by building the skills needed for your ideal job through training, certifications, or freelance work.
    • Join professional groups or associations. Surrounding yourself with people in your target industry helps you stay motivated, informed, and more likely to hear about new opportunities.
    • Partner with a Specialized Staffing Firm: In a slow hiring environment, recruiters can connect you with roles that aren’t publicly advertised. They know which companies are actively hiring and can match you with the right opportunities, even in a cautious market.

The job market has been tough before—and it will be again. For many job seekers, this isn’t the first challenging season, and it likely won’t be the last. But with the right strategy, support, and mindset, you’ll get through it.
