How Much Do Engineers Make? Current Engineering Salaries

It’s not a secret that the current employment market is blazing hot. The Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) reports that job openings are at an all-time high at 10.9 million in July 2021, while unemployment in the engineering field continues to stay low at 2%.

In the latest Employment Development Department (EDD) Labor Report, Engineering labor participation is currently up 6.6% in California compared to Aug. 2020. In metropolitans with larger technical and manufacturing presences, that labor growth is higher. In Silicon Valley (San Jose-Santa Clara-Sunnyvale areas), labor participation in the engineering field is 10.2% higher than last year, while in Orange County, it’s 9.8%.

In order to be competitive in this market, employers are offering higher salaries to top engineering talents. To get an idea of engineers’ current earning potentials, we used Salary.com’s database to compile the average salaries of Mechanical, Electrical, and Manufacturing Engineers by career levels and geographic locations. We also included the main metropolitans with higher engineering labor participation rates: Silicon Valley and Orange County.
