What Certifications Matter? – Tips for Hiring Engineers

When you’re looking for a new candidate, typically, you’ll be checking for skills matches, the right personality match and someone who has a good background. But, what about certifications? Hiring someone who is already certified in your specialized field not only saves you money on training, but also ensures you’re getting a completely qualified candidate.

When engineers take the time to seek out additional certifications, you get a better idea of the type of employee you’re going to be hiring. Some of these certifications take months to earn, and you’ll know you’re getting someone truly dedicated to their career.

Let’s take a look at a few of the available certifications for mechanical, manufacturing and electrical engineers. Keep in mind this is not an exhaustive list, and there are dozens of certifications available.

Mechanical Engineering Certifications

Certified Automation Professional® (CAP®) Program
ISA Certified Control Systems Technician® (CCST®) Program

Both of these programs are offered through the ISA and focus on teaching advanced skills for automation and control systems. Look for candidates who excelled and earned the additional CAP and CCST recognition awards.

Manufacturing Engineering Certifications

Certified Maintenance & Reliability Professional – This certification is offered by the Society for Maintenance & Reliability Professionals and is used to verify specific skills. This must be renewed every three years.

Six Sigma Black Belt Certification – Also offered by the Society for Manufacturing Engineers, this program teaches leadership and develops candidates who are looking to take on more responsibilities and grow.

Electrical Engineering Certifications
