Engineers need to stay up to date on the latest technological advances both in their fields and throughout the scientific community. But reading dry scientific journals all day can become boring and time consuming. Thankfully, we have podcasts. Presented in an entertaining format, podcasts are an effective way to keep informed on current events.
Here are eight fantastic podcasts to which every engineer should subscribe, covering both engineering and general science.
The Engineering Commons – With the tagline “Practical insights for the engineering crowd,” and a panel stocked with a wide breadth of engineering backgrounds (mechanical, civil, electrical and applications), TEC is an indispensable resource. Recent topics include advances in plastics, spatial reasoning and the pros and cons of pursuing advanced education.
LabCAST – LabCAST is the video podcast of the MIT Media Lab. LabCAST is devoted to showcasing the Lab’s cutting-edge research and although updated infrequently – there were just three episodes released in 2014 – each installment is well worth watching
Star Talk – Neil DeGrasse Tyson is a bona fide science superstar, and the famed astrophysicist uses all his celebrity cred to land A-list science and pop culture guests. Recent episodes include discussions with Bill Nye (a frequent guest) on the Planetary Society’s LightSail spacecraft, Elon Musk on the future of humanity, and Richard Dawkins on evolution.
Engineering TV – Engineering TV is a by-engineers, for engineers video library covering new products, emergent technologies, industry trade shows and much more.
Science Magazine – The official podcast of one of the planet’s foremost peer-reviewed scientific journals is a treasure trove of scientific delights, covering a widespread range of topics and featuring coverage of fascinating original research.
60-Second Science – Always busy and on the go, or maybe you just have an exceedingly short attention span? Look no further than this offering from Scientific American, to which you can listen in the time it takes to brush your teeth.
NASA ScienceCasts – The space agency presents an archive of short, fascinating videos about unusual topics encountered by NASA’s scientific missions.
The E&T Podcast – The E&T Podcast serves as a complement to Engineering & Technology magazine. It offers coverage of technological developments, news and interviews.
