Whether you work with a recruiter on a regular basis or you simply use them from time to time when you need to fill a position, there are a few things to keep in mind in order to have a productive working relationship with them.

Just like any relationship, it needs a little work. You’ll find that by spending a little more time talking with your recruiter that they will they be able to meet your needs more readily and the entire process will go a lot smoother.

Here are a few things to keep in mind when you’re working with an engineering recruiter.

Consulting Works

You know what you need right now and the type of employee you think you want – but if you spend a little time talking with your recruiter, you might be surprised at how that description can change. Taking the time to sit down with your recruiter and actually talk through your needs, what you’re looking for both now and in the long term as well as discussing your company culture can have a dramatic effect on the types of candidates you end up with.

Sure, you know your business backwards and forwards – and your recruiter will learn a lot more about it too if you spend a little more time with them. On the flip side, they know recruiting backwards and forwards and you can benefit greatly from their knowledge.

Stay Informed

Most recruiting firms send out occasional informational emails or newsletters. You may not think you need to read these, but they are a wealth of information, even if you’re not looking to hire anyone right this second.

When you do get an email, take a few minutes to read through it. You’ll find some great tips for managing your workforce, making your job easier and yes, of course, things to think about when you are looking to hire someone.

Honesty is Essential

One of the most common issues facing employers and recruiters is a lack of communication and in many cases, a lack of total honesty. If you don’t like a certain candidate, or you feel they are missing the mark, you need to speak up. They need to understand your needs and for that to happen, you need to stop worrying about offending anyone and just be honest. In the end, both of you will be a lot happier.

Working with an engineering recruiting can be a great experience and with the right communication and efforts, you’ll be surprised at just how amazing your new candidate pool will be.
