SoloPoint Upholds Strong Support For CAD Community

For mechanical engineers designers and drafters, CAD is considered to be the most essential tool in their repertoire. As a top engineering staffing resource, SoloPoint Solutions makes it a point to attend and champion events that promote CAD education and advancement.

In June, SoloPoint was able to attend two events directed to CAD Users in the Bay Area. One was the June meeting for the Silicon Valley SolidWorks User Group Network (SWUGN) and the other one is the De Anza College 2015 CAD Fair.

Silicon Valley SWUGN

On June 24, the SWUGN held a meeting at the Hacker Dojo located in Mountain View, CA. Although this group mostly consists of SolidWorks users, the meetings still include companies showcasing CAD updates or design products that can impact CAD users.

At the beginning of the event, the group examined a new CAD platform, Onshape. Onshape is said to be the first full cloud 3D CAD System. It works on mobile and desktop operating systems such as Windows, iOS and Android.  Onshape differs from traditional CAD software in that the application resides solely on the cloud and is strictly on a subscription-based purchase. This is exciting for CAD users who work as a team in designing different features of a product since this tool allows them to work on it simultaneously.

Silicon Valley Chapter President Brian Titus talked about the add-on surfacing tool provided by nPower Software. This tool is an extension of SolidWorks and allows the user to free form complex design in an easier and more artistic fashion. Titus said this tool is ideal for industrial engineers or anyone who likes to perform reverse engineering.

Santa Clara-based company, GoEngineer, presented their latest SolidWorks Sheet Metal Course. This course includes training on methods on how to design standalone sheet metal parts and conversion of parts from other materials to sheet metal. This would be ideal for users who may have used SolidWorks in other material applications but would like to learn how to design using sheet metal.

De Anza College 2015 CAD Fair

The next day after the SolidWorks show, the SoloPoint Team was stationed at De Anza College’s annual CAD Fair. This event is a combination of a job fair for current and past De Anza students, as well as a demonstration of the De Anza CAD Training program.

At the event, SoloPoint Principal Tom Truong was one of the invited speakers to discuss about the current state of the job market for those with CAD skills. He talked about the current employment opportunities available for CAD Users and the importance of ongoing CAD education. Truong also talked about how SoloPoint has been a long-time partner and supporter of the De Anza CAD Training Program because of its impact in the eventual job placements of its student.

CAD Technology is constantly moving forward so at SoloPoint Solutions, we never stop supporting groups and organizations that promote the training and retraining of this vital tool to current and prospective engineers.
