Job Application Best Practices: Apply Directly? Or Through a Recruiter?

Whether you’ve been looking for a job for a while, or you are just getting your feet wet, one of the most common questions we hear is whether or not to apply for a job directly, or go through a recruiter. While it might seem simpler to just apply for the job on your own, there are quite a few powerful reasons you’ll want to go with a recruiter first.

First and foremost, as we mentioned in our article, “Why You Should Take a Recruiting Agency’s Call,” a recruiter has a stake in your success. They only get paid if you get the job. That right there means you are going to have one very powerful (and motivated!) ally. In today’s job market, that is exactly what you need. While there may be more jobs available, the marketplace is still crowded with qualified candidates and landing the job you really want can be anything but easy.

The next reason you’re going to want to consider going through a recruiter is the fact that they have a multitude of connections in your field. This is particularly true if you are working with a specialty recruiter. Instead of being consigned to a heap of resumes, this is the best way to fast-track yourself for an interview. Companies rely on recruiters for a reason – they typically find them the best overall candidates for open positions. This is definitely something you want working for you.

Another facet that cannot be overlooked is the fact that by working with a recruiter, you’re going to be able to get some extra coaching and help – and this will come in handy for your interview. Typically, a recruiter will sit down with you and discuss your current situation, your goals and your skills. They take this information to help them find the job that is perfect for you. In many cases, the jobs you are applying for (and not getting) aren’t the right fit for you. Working with a recruiter helps you find targeted positions that you are much more likely to land.

Lastly, if you go through a company’s website to apply, not only are you just another face in the crowd, but you’re going to lack the negotiating power that a recruiter has. Want a better salary and a nice benefits package? If you have a recruiter helping you, you are much more likely to get what you want.

While there’s nothing wrong with applying directly for a job, it certainly works in your favor to go through a recruiter instead.
